Scott Merritt

Chapter Director

Scott Merritt brings 20 years of career success across broad markets to Back on My Feet’s Austin Chapter Director role. Scott comes to Back on My Feet from HCA Healthcare, where he served since 2012 as Austin Heart’s electrophysiology department manager before transitioning to the division electronic health record (EHR) provider solutions implementation team in 2015. He is very proud to have helped support providers and staff deliver a world-class healthcare experience to their patients.

Prior to his work with HCA, Scott held various business development, sales and marketing positions primarily in the healthcare sector with industry leaders including Johnson & Johnson and Healogics, driving significant contractual, sales or referral growth in each respective position.

Scott served on the Advisory Board of local nonprofit Run Free Texas from 2016-2018, where he helped grow its largest fundraiser, the 80’s 8k road race. He also led its Austin Gives Miles (AGM) fundraising efforts in conjunction with the Austin Marathon, increasing the organization’s overall donations by 5%.

Scott first began volunteering with Back on My Feet in 2016 after researching ways to combine his passions for running and serving others. Back on My Feet’s mission to utilize the discipline, self-confidence and camaraderie running provides as a foundation for members to regain employment and housing resonated profoundly with his personal running journey. “From the first run, it was immediately evident that the relationship between and quality of the members and volunteers made this a special organization. I also quickly realized we’re all only a few life events from a very different reality.”

Scott has an English degree from Binghamton University (SUNY) and a Master’s Degree in Sport Management from the University of Connecticut. He is also a Level I certified run coach through Road Runners Club of America (RRCA).

An Austinite since 2006, Scott was immediately drawn to the city’s prominent running scene and has run with Gilbert’s Gazelles, Rogue Running, and Austin Runners Club. When he isn’t running, Scott enjoys chasing and being chased by, climbed on and enjoying Austin’s outdoor adventures with his two kids, Zahra (6) and Winn (4).

Emmanuel (Manny) Zapata

Emmanuel (Manny) Zapata

Member Services Manager

Emmanuel (Manny) has two passions in life, helping others and fitness. From a young age, he knew he wanted to overcome his socioeconomic background. With the guidance of role models and his family’s support, Emmanuel attended St. Edward’s University through the CAMP scholarship. During this time, he found fitness to be a key factor to staying motivated and focused.

After graduation, Emmanuel found an opportunity to give back by working with youth at risk within a children’s shelter. During his tenure, he realized physical activity helped youth reduce stress, anxiety, and helped them stay focus and motivated. Emmanuel advocated for the integration of physical activity into the shelter’s program and helped the residents participate in a variety of sports. After his time at the children’s shelter, Emmanuel knew he wanted his next endeavor to include physical fitness in some way. Fortunately, Emmanuel found Back on My Feet.

“Running can give people the opportunity to restore confidence, strength and self-esteem. Something so simple that anyone can do it! Back on My Feet gave me what I was looking for, using fitness to help others.”
